Milbank Fund Announces Emerging Consensus Among Medical Specialties for End-of-Life Care
New York - In 1996, Christine Cassell, M.D., and Kathleen Foley, M.D., convened representatives from medical specialty orga-nizations to share “existing or proposed policies concerning decision-making at the end of life and the quality of clinical management of dying patient.” At that meeting, the group came up with “Core Principles for End-of-Life Care.” Since then, fourteen societies and the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations have adopted policies based on the core principles. In a new report, Principles for Care of Patients at the End of Life: An Emerging Consensus among the Specialties of Medicine, Cassel and Foley describe how specialty groups tai-lored principles to meet their particular needs, and detail how such policies have been adopted. Among the spe-cialty groups involved are the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine, the American Pain Society, and the National Kidney Foundation.
