The Board and staff of Americans for Better Care of the Dying want to share with our members the sad news of the death of our friend and Board member Dr. Lloyd Kitchens.
From early in our work, Lloyd noted our efforts and befriended us. He read our materials, advised us on process, and, quite simply, believed in the importance and vision of our work. Even late in his life, troubled by a remarkable array of serious medical problems, Lloyd came to Board meetings, read and responded to letters, and helped raise funds. He was a leader in the American College of Physicians - American Society of Internal Medicine and encouraged that respected organization to pay attention to our topics. Mostly, though, as for most people held dear, Lloyd was a remarkable person who gave generously, celebrated life, loved his family dearly, and tried to make a better world. We shall miss his good cheer, his hardheaded strategy, and his clear thinking. A resident of Dallas, he died on Thursday, August 23; he was 54.
In recognition of his part in our early life, ABCD has established the Lloyd Kitchens Memorial Fund, which will be used to continue our work on the interface of clinical practice with law and ethics, the area most central to Lloyd's recent work. One of his other favorite projects included an interfaith spiritual garden where his wife said he hoped to establish a place where patients and their families could pray or meditate. His family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to ABCD, or to the interfaith spiritual garden in care of Baylor University Medical Center Foundation, 3600 Gaston Ave., Dallas, TX 75246.
